Michael Carrick gave a nonchalant response after being informed that Wayne Rooney wants him to stay on as Manchester United manager next season. The former England midfielder has enjoyed a brilliant start to his interim spell, winning seven of his nine Premier League games at the helm. United have earned more points than any other club in the division since he was appointed in January.
It has led to growing calls for Carrick to be offered the job permanently at the end of the season, despite United chiefs keeping their options open. Rooney is among those convinced the 44-year-old has done enough to earn a longer stay at Old Trafford. He made his feelings crystal clear following United’s crucial victory over Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Rooney said: “100 per cent, he should [get the job]. I knew this was going to happen with Michael Carrick. I know him very well. I know his character and his personality.
“It needed a calm head, but someone who knows the place. The players needed some love, and he has given them that.
“We have seen the players play with more quality, more together as a team, and they look like a very strong team. Why would you change?”
Carrick, however, wouldn’t be drawn into saying much about Rooney’s comments when they were put to him following the win over Villa.
He said: “There’s not that much noise, is there? I don’t mean Wayne, I just mean in general. It’s only noise if you listen to it. It doesn’t affect me one bit, to be honest.
“I’m in this position at the moment, doing the best I can, and I’m loving it, obviously, but whatever’s going to happen is going to happen. It’s all pretty calm.

“We can definitely enjoy the win and look forward to Friday night. But other than that, that’s all I’m thinking about really.”
In spite of Carrick’s impressive reign, United are yet to make a decision on whether to hand him the reins next season or appoint a more experienced candidate.
Roy Keane believes there is only one option, and it doesn’t involve Carrick staying on. He told Sky Sports: “I think there are better options out there. I think the games where he has come in and won football matches, he’s done a very good job.
“He’s obviously simplified things but there’s been no jeopardy in those games. He’s had free weeks to prepare for the matches. It’s been good timing for him to go in there and he’s done a very good job.
“I take my hat off. If he does get the job in the summer, I’d say: ‘Good luck to you’. But I think there are far better options out there.
“Everyone else can get giddy about being third in the league, but I don’t. I’m not one of them. I don’t get all excited with stuff like that. I get excited when teams are winning trophies and competing week in, week out.”
