Michael van Gerwen 10-dart blitz leaves fans saying same thing about Luke Humphries | Other | Sport
Michael van Gerwen made Luke Humphries eat his words after storming back to beat the world No.1 in Cardiff. ‘MVG’ was 3-0 down in their quarter-final clash in tonight’s Premier League Darts meeting but then turned the tide with a 10-dart leg.
The Dutchman took out double eight to reduce the deficit. Despite Humphries immediately restoring his three-leg advantage, Van Gerwen stormed back to take five on the bounce and prevail 6-4. It was the sixth time in seven Premier League events in 2025 that he has won his first match, despite ‘Cool hand Luke’ having vowed to end that impressive run, saying: “Obviously, for me, I’m probably the one that stops him.”
Afterwards, fans were quick to remind the 2024 world champion of his comments, with @paulc1989_ writing on X: “Humpries too cocky saying he will end Mvg’s 1/4 final run.” He added laughing emojis for good measure.
@Tungsten_Tales questioned whether the apparent confidence of the star had been misplaced, adding: “Three consecutive quarter-final defeats for Luke Humphries in the Premier League. Is there reason for concern for Cool Hand?”
Humphries risked further ridicule by his decision making at 5-4 down. Left needing to take out 80 to level the match, he went for an ambitious ‘double-double’ 20, but botched his attempt before his rival sealed matters.
@smiffy2609 was cynical with his assessment, posting: “Wouldn’t trust Luke Humphries to walk your dog. What the hell was he doing there? Shocking.”
Van Gerwen was emotional after his win, shouting loudly and fist-pumping towards the crowd. He later credited his refusal to let the situation get to him for his unlikely comeback.
“When you win games like that, it’s important, it’s nice,” he said. “I kept my nerves. I kept focus going. That’s important in games like this and it was a really important two points.”
