Millions unclaimed as DWP says apply for £600 cost of living support | Personal Finance | Finance

Britons are being alerted to seize the opportunity for cash boosts of up to £600, as the deadline looms and £57 million lies unclaimed.

The Government has extended the Household Support Fund into the spring, distributing £421 million through councils in England and an additional £79 million to local authorities in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Families on low income or those financially stretched are encouraged to contact their local councils for potential aid amidst soaring living costs. However, it’s crucial to understand that the distribution of funds is at the discretion of individual councils, with some offering financial support between £125 and £600.

As the current extension of the Household Support Fund draws near its September 30 cut-off date, households still have time to apply. Around 100 councils haven’t yet fully utilised their allocated funds, leaving approximately £57 million up for grabs nationwide.

For those worried about qualifying for Winter Fuel payments this year, additional help may still be accessible. This week, Liz Kendall, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, confirmed: “We are extending the Household Support Fund for the next six months because it is a lifeline for people who are struggling with the cost of living.”

Who can claim the Household Support Fund

The distribution of the Household Support Fund (HSF) rests in the hands of local councils, with eligibility and levels of support subject to variation by area. Typically, priority goes to those on benefits, considered vulnerable, or with little savings.

Previous recipients of HSF may find themselves ineligible for the latest round. Eligible parties can expect their local council to contact them about what comes next.

While some individuals will need to apply directly via their council’s website, authorities are still in the process of setting out who qualifies following the Government’s recent announcement of the HSF extension.

Councils have the power to decide the amount allocated to each household and the timing of fund availability. For details on application openings and eligibility, residents should consult their local council.

For assistance in identifying your local council, the “Find your local council” tool on the Government’s website will point you in the right direction.
