Moment Anthony Joshua is saved from car crash as vehicle wrecked | Boxing | Sport

Anthony Joshua has been injured in a car crash in Nigeria that has left two dead, with concerning footage showing the British heavyweight boxer visibly shaken and in pain while being lifted out of the car. The collision left Joshua with minor injuries but it is claimed two of the other passengers from the same vehicle died in the incident.

According to reports, the crash occurred when a Lexus Jeep, in which Joshua was riding in the back seat, collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The circumstances around the incident are being investigated and AJ’s team have been approached for comment.

Footage circulating online shows a dazed Joshua being helped out of the vehicle by concerned locals. Sitting down after being hauled out, he is seen wincing in pain. Another video shows the topless 36-year-old sat stationary on the back seat and looking down at his right arm while appearing bewildered.

An eye-witness, Adeniyi Orojo, told Punch newspaper: “It was a two-vehicle convoy: a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him. There was also a passenger sitting beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed. His security detail was in the vehicle behind them before the crash.

“Other eyewitnesses and I began the rescue and flagged down oncoming vehicles to assist. A few minutes after the crash, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived. The passenger beside the driver and the person beside Joshua died on the spot.”

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn has since added: “I am away on a family holiday and awoke to the news of this incident. We are trying to contact Anthony and in the meantime we don’t want to speculate on how he is.

“But thankfully he appears OK from what I have seen in the images. We are awaiting more information on what has happened and will update in due course.”

Joshua was only last in the boxing ring 10 days ago when he knocked out Jake Paul in Miami. The two-time heavyweight champion left Paul with a broken jaw following a fearsome punch that knocked the American down to the canvas.

AJ then called on his compatriot Tyson Fury to come out of retirement to face him next year in a blockbuster bout. The Londoner said: “He came up against a real fighter tonight that’s had a 15-month layoff. We shook off the cobwebs, and I can’t wait to roll into 2026.

“If Tyson Fury is as serious as he thinks he is, and he wants to put down his Twitter fingers and put on some gloves and come and fight one of the realest fighters out there that will take on any challenge, step into the ring with me next if you’re a real bad boy. Don’t do all that talking: ‘AJ this, AJ that’. Let’s see you in the ring and talk with your fists.”
