M&S shopper spends £20 on food but Brits are floored by amount he gets

There’s nothing like the feeling of doing your weekly food shop, and one man recently left Brits pretty stunned after visiting Marks & Spencer (M&S) to snap up some essentials. The shopper, who remains anonymous, revealed what he managed to bag for just over £20.00 aftter visiting the supermarket at the last minute.

He felt he had to share his shopping haul after being quite taken aback with what he managed to buy in such a short space of time. Sharing a picture on Reddit, he showed off his finds as he laid them out on a table for all to see, and it’s fair to say he left people pretty stunned.

He told people he’d visited M&S, and managed to bag items such as sandwiches, a salad, roast potatoes, vegetables and fruit as part of his shopping haul. It comes after another popular supermarket announced it would open 10 new stores this year.

The man wrote: “M&S, five minutes before closing. £20.87.” Though he seemed delighted to show off his goodies, not everyone thought he got a lot for his money.

Since it’s been shared, the post has been engaged with hundreds of times, and people were quick to comment too. Even though he seemed happy with his purchases, others didn’t seem too impressed.

One person said: “That’s quite expensive.” Another shared the same sentiment, adding: “Still not great for £20 to be honest! I usually go for freezable yellow sticker meat. You get the best value that way.”

Some thought it was a good deal though, as one wrote: “Nice find, you’ve got a few days worth of tasty lunches and dinner!”

Another person said he didn’t put enough effort in, adding: “Tbh, this is amateur yellow sticker work.” Someone else thought the same, as they commented: “Poor effort.”

The man also shared his thoughts, and he wasn’t too disappointed with his haul, even though he admitted he could have worked harder to find more discounted items. He added: “As most comments have said, still very expensive and not a great yellow sticker effort. Sorted tea for me and the partner as well as lunches and snacks for the next day when I couldn’t be bothered to cook, so worth it in my opinion.”

When it comes to shopping, it seems everyone has different opinions as to what’s considered to be a good deal. After all, some people are more skilled than others when it comes to finding major discounts.

Even though some people thought the bill was still quite expensive, it’s reported M&S is working to help make food cheaper at the supermarket. It’s said there has been a significant investment in price reductions on everyday items within its Remarksable range.

As well as this, it’s claimed to be focusing on everyday staples like bread and milk. The company also offers promotions, including “two for” deals on certain products, and also sometimes reduces the price of food nearing its sell-by date.

There are a few ways you can try and save money while doing your shop. In 2024, it was reported: “M&S Food is investing in the price of over 200 products as it re-affirms its commitment to delivering trusted value for its 30m customers.

“Remarksable Value favourite baked beans, Fairtrade Rich Roast Instant Coffee and Easy Cook Long grain rice are included in this latest round. M&S launched its Remarksable Value range back in 2019 – made up of over 100 everyday staples with an M&S quality point of difference and price benchmarked against key competitors.

“Over half of Remarksable Value products have the Eat Well health seal of approval, meaning they meet criteria developed by M&S nutritionists in partnership with the British Nutrition Foundation.”
