Munich: Mother and two-year-old daughter die after horror car attack | World | News

A mother and her two-year-old daughter have died having been hit by the car used in the Munich attack on Thursday.

The vehicle was driven into a union demonstration in the centre of the city injuring 39 people, including children, officials said.

Two individuals were very seriously hurt, and eight seriously.

A 24-year-old Afghan, who arrived in Germany as an asylum seeker in 2016 and lived in Munich, was arrested after the incident.

Officers pulled him out of the car after firing a shot at the vehicle, which did not hit him.

A judge on Friday ordered that the suspect, who has been identified only as Farhad N because of German privacy rules, remains in custody awaiting a possible indictment, AP reports.

Prosecutor Gabriele Tilmann said that the suspect said “Allahu Akbar”, or “God is great”, to police and then prayed after his arrest – which prompted a department that investigates extremism and terror to take on the case immediately.

In questioning, he admitted deliberately driving into the demonstration and “gave an explanation that I would summarise as religious motivation”, Ms Tilmann said.

She did not give details, but added: “According to all we know at the moment, I would venture to speak of an Islamist motivation.”

Bavaria’s state interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, has said that the suspect was known to authorities in connection with theft and drug offences.

But he did not give further details.

Bavarian governor Markus Soder said at the scene, where a damaged Mini and debris, including shoes, could be seen: “It is simply terrible.

“We feel with the victims, we are praying for the victims — we hope very much that they all make it.”

“It is suspected to be an attack — a lot points to that,” Mr Soder added.

Mayor Dieter Reiter said he was “deeply shocked” by the incident.

It comes after a series of attacks involving immigrants in recent months.

These have pushed migration to the forefront of the campaign for Germany’s election on February 23.
