Myanmar earthquake LIVE: China issues tsunami warning | World | News
Myanmar was shaken by a strong earthquake on Friday, which has sparked panic in several cities in South East Asia. The quake was initially assessed as having 7.7 magnitude, but it has since been upgraded to 8.2 magnitude. Fears of a tsunami has since erupted, with the Tsunami Warning Centre of China’s Ministry of Natural Resources assessing local tsunamis may occur – although China would not be impacted by them.
While the tremor originated in Myanmar, where authorities fear thousands may have been killed, it deeply affected also neighbouring countries, including Thailand and Vietnam.
In Vietnam’s Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, lights were swaying from the shaking. In Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, a skyscraper and other buildings reportedly collapsed, killing at least two people and trapping around 50 workers under the debris.
Hundreds were seen running outside of their homes and buildings after the earthquake, and Reuters reports scenes of panic and water splashing out of swimming pools due to the sheer strength of the tremor.
