Nationwide has confirmed the future of its 605 UK branches, following the closure of 432 bank branches across the UK.

The building society has made a pledge to keep all 605 Nationwide branches open on UK high streets until at least the start of 2030, giving customers the freedom to choose how to bank, whether that’s in branch, in the app, or over the phone. The pledge has been made despite a swathe of rival bank branches being closed, including Lloyds, Halifax, Bank of Scotland, NatWest and Santander. Nationwide said that many vulnerable and older customers rely on face-to-face support from a branch, making its branches a “valued part of the UK’s high streets”.

But the building society said many younger people also use branches, with more than one in 10 of its new student accounts being opened in branches in the new academic year.

Nationwide said it operates the UK’s biggest single-brand banking network, with 605 branches across the country, but after buying Virgin Money in 2024, it gained an additional 91 branches, giving it a total network of 696 branches.

The commitment to keeping branches open until at least 2030 also applied to Virgin money branches, even if these are located close to a Nationwide branch.

Dame Debbie Crosbie, group chief executive at Nationwide, said: “Branches are important to our customers, to communities and to the health of our high streets. That’s why Nationwide will continue to keep branches open in addition to our investment in online and telephone channels.”

The building society said it has seen a particular increase in account openings in locations where it is the “last branch in town” and since January 2025, another 33 Nationwide branches have become the last in town when other banks have closed their branches.

Nationwide said a third (33%) of its current accounts and about a fifth (22%) of savings accounts were opened in branch in the six months to the end of September 2025, with volumes up compared with a year earlier.

The society also uses branches to host dementia clinics via Dementia UK’s specialist admiral nurses, to hold digital lessons to boost people’s tech confidence and to provide “safe spaces” to support victim-survivors of domestic abuse.

Nationwide’s commitment to keeping its 605 branches open comes following 432 bank closures across the UK in 2025, according to analysis from Which?. These included 105 from NatWest, 101 from Halifax, 95 from Santander, 93 from Lloyds, 24 from the Bank of Scotland, eight from TSB and six from Barclays.

So far this year, a total of 71 bank branches have been scheduled to close including 40 from Lloyds, 17 from the bank of Scotland and 14 from Halifax.
