Nationwide customers given ‘three week’ deadline for £50 payment | Personal Finance | Finance
Nationwide has issued an alert to all customers and told them some may need to take action within the next three weeks – or face losing out on £50. The money came as part of the deal for Nationwide to buy Virgin Money.
In what it called “The Big Nationwide Thank You” a £50 payment was made from the bank to over 12 million eligible members. The payments, which began in April 2025, were a way to thank members for their support in building Nationwide’s financial strength to make the purchase possible.
The bank has now said that all the payment have gone out. However if people requested it to be made by cheque these must be paid in by January 1 2026 otherwise they will miss out. Nationwide said: “On 1 October 2024, we completed the purchase of Virgin Money, becoming an even stronger force in UK banking. This was made possible by the financial strength Nationwide members helped us build.
“To say thank you, we’ve given over 12 million of our members £50 each as part of The Big Nationwide Thank You. Over £600 million in total.”
How did members qualify for the payment?
The person must have been a Nationwide member on 30 September 2024. And still have been a member when we made the payment.
In the 12 months to the end of September 2024, members must also have:
- had at least one qualifying transaction on your Nationwide current account or savings account, or
- had at least £100 in total in one or more of your Nationwide current accounts and savings accounts, or
- owed at least £100 in total on one or more Nationwide residential mortgages.
The person also met the requirements if you completed a switch to any Nationwide current account. They just had to do so between 1 July 2024 and 30 September 2024 using the Current Account Switch Service.
For full details, including any exclusions that might apply, read the terms and conditions.
How did the £50 get paid?
Payments have been made into either a current account, instant access or limited access savings account in your name.
If you have a mortgage with us, we have paid £50 into the bank account used to pay your mortgage Direct Debit – as long as the account is in your name.
All other payments have been made by cheque. Cheques must be paid in by 1 January 2026 to make sure you don’t miss out on the payment.
