Newcastle address Tino Livramento injury after defender stretchered off | Football | Sport
Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has confirmed that Tino Livramento has sustained a knee injury after the defender was stretchered off during the clash with Arsenal. The former Chelsea star departed the pitch with his hands covering his face and appeared distraught after landing awkwardly following an aerial duel late in the match.
The England international was immediately substituted by club captain Jamaal Lascelles, with the coaching staff clearly worried about the 21-year-old’s condition during the reverse against the Gunners. Howe, addressing the media in his press conference following the defeat, said: “Seeing him go off in that manner was really distressing. I am concerned because he’s such an important player for us.
“He’s been magnificent at the start of this season. He’s a big player, so if we are going to lose him it’s going to be a huge blow.”
As Livramento was escorted down the tunnel, Newcastle issued a statement reading: “Tino is unable to continue and is stretchered off after landing awkwardly while challenging for a header. We hope to see you back soon.”
Anthony Gordon, who had been withdrawn earlier himself, offered his teammate a comforting touch as he was taken into the depths of St James’ Park.
Howe was awaiting confirmation regarding the complete severity of Livramento’s injury and said: “I haven’t spoken to him or anyone from the medical side yet.”
Discussing the 2-1 defeat in general terms, Howe said: “I thought we tried. We gave everything to the game. It was really physical. I don’t think we were at our best today being honest.
“Arsenal played very well. We had our chances in the game and we took the lead and we were desperate to try and hang on to that lead. Nick [Pope] made some good saves for us but it wan’t to be and we conceded set-pieces at the end so disappointing.”
