Newcastle vs Sunderland halted over racism allegation as ref takes action | Football | Sport
Referee Anthony Taylor halted Newcastle’s match with Sunderland in the second half following a report of discriminatory abuse towards visiting defender Lutsharel Geertruida. The incident took place just five minutes into the second half, with the official calling both captains to the dugout to explain the delay.
At the time, Sven Botman had been fouled and during the stoppage, Sunderland skipper Granit Xhaka spoke to the referee. Once the discriminatory language directed at Geertruida was alleged, the match was brought to a stop. Taylor immediately went to the side of the pitch to speak with both captains and the coaching staff.
The Premier League Match Centre explained: “Today’s match between Newcastle United and Sunderland was temporarily paused during the second half after a report of discriminatory abuse from the crowd, directed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida.
“This is in line with the Premier League’s on-field anti-discrimination protocol. The incident at St James’ Park will now be fully investigated. We offer our full support to the player and both clubs. Racism has no place in our game, or anywhere in society. We will continue to work with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums are an inclusive and welcoming environment for all.”
Sky Sports’ commentary also claimed that there was a report of racial abuse.
The terby was a typically tense affair, but Anthony Gordon got the hosts off to a perfect start when Nick Woltemade capitalised on a Luke O’Nien error and the ball fell to Gordon, who sent the home crowd into a frenzy with his finish.
The comeback was kick-started by Chemsdine Talbi, as the Sunderland forward deflected a set-piece into the back of the net.
Newcastle thought they had secured all three points against their fierce rivals when substitute Malick Thiaw headed home from a corner, only to be denied when Jacob Murphy was ruled offside and interfering with play on the goal line.
Then Newcastle’s misery was compounded when Brian Brobbey scored a late winner.
He turned home Enzo Le Fee’s cross, which was deflected by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, and ensured that their incredible record against the Magpies continued.
Sunderland are now unbeaten in their last 11 league games against Newcastle.
