Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon aimed a cheeky remark at Sunderland defender Trai Hume as tensions boiled between the pair during Saturday’s Tyne-Wear derby in the FA Cup. The grudge third-round clash at the Stadium of Light didn’t disappoint, as players of both sides battled for bragging rights.
And Gordon clashed with Hume just after the hour mark while the game opened up as the hosts sought to pull a goal back and the visitors looked to put things to bed.
Bruno Guimaraes received the ball in acres of space from Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka before aiming a lofted through ball towards Gordon.
The 22-year-old rushed onto the pass but couldn’t fend off the challenge of Hume, who allowed Sunderland stopper Anthony Patterson to collect.
Gordon and Hume continued to wrestle off the ball, though, and the latter grabbed a handful of the former’s shirt as he attempted to walk away.
That sparked a row as Gordon aggressively pushed the right-back away, prompting Ballard to rush over and give the Newcastle man a shove of his own.
Isak then got involved, pushing Ballard away from his team-mate while pointing at his face before a group of players, including Jobe Bellingham and Sean Longstaff, calmed the situation down.
After referee Craig Pawson booked Gordon for his reaction to the shirt tug, the former Everton forward was spotted by cameras walking away from the incident with Hume.
He offered the Sunderland man a wink while telling him that he could have his shirt after full-time. He was spotted saying: “You can have this after.”
Newcastle had travelled to Sunderland with just two away wins under their belt all season and wary of the potential banana skin their bitter rivals represented.
They hadn’t beaten Sunderland since August 2011, losing six and drawing three of the nine meetings since. Eddie Howe’s side produced a professional first-half performance and led at the break through Daniel Ballard’s unfortunate own goal.
