Nick Kyrgios left speechless by what Aryna Sabalenka did in Battle of the Sexes showdown | Tennis | Sport
Nick Kyrgios was left speechless after watching Aryna Sabalenka hit an incredible winner during their Battle of the Sexes showdown. The two players took to the court at the Coca Cola Arena in Dubai, with the Australian coming out on top as he secured a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Kyrgios and Sabalenka set up their showdown earlier this year, with the match proving controversial and dividing opinion. Both players were only allowed a first serve, with Sabalenka’s side of the court made nine per cent smaller to negate some of her opponent’s physical advantage. But the 2022 Wimbledon finalist dominated from start to finish as he took around 70 minutes to dismantle his opponent.
With Sabalenka attempting to fend off two set points on her own serve at 3-5, 15-40 in the first set, the two players engaged in a ferocious rally.
And after the ball had been played to her forehand side, Sabalenka unleashed a huge winner down the line, which left her opponent rooted to the spot.
Kyrgios was mesmerised by what he had seen from the world No. 1 and stood with his mouth open as he was lost for words.
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist then broke into a smile, before walking towards the side of the court to collect his towel.
And former Brazil footballer Ronaldo, who was watching on in the crowd, also appeared to like the shot as he was spotted smiling as well.
Following the match, Kyrgios said: “Seeing someone as great as Sabalenka out here and myself, it truly is a spectacle, and a great stepping stone forward for the sport of tennis.
“Of course I was nervous. Not many people would have put their hand up to be in this position. Sabalenka was up for the challenge, and the scoreline was close. This was all the world was talking about for the last six months.
“She broke my serve numerous times, and I had to strap in. Honestly, I would love to play her again and showcase her talent and what I have left in the tank.”
And Sabalenka added: “I felt great. I think I put up a great fight. He was struggling, he got really tired. I think it was a great level, I made a lot of great shots, moved a lot to the net, drop shots. Really enjoyed the show.
“Next time when I play him, I already know the tactics, his strengths and weaknesses, and it will be a better match for sure. I love to challenge myself and I’d love to play again.”
