Nick Kyrgios out of Wimbledon as Aussie issues heartfelt statement | Tennis | Sport

Nick Kyrgios will not play at Wimbledon this summer, he has confirmed on social media. The Aussie has been out of action since crashing out of the Miami Open in March, and with a knee injury taking longer than expected to recover, he will play no part in the men’s draw at SW19.

Kyrgios was slated to return in men’s doubles at the French Open, but a knee flare-up saw him withdraw on the eve of the tournament. Fans had anticipated that the 30-year-old would make his return at Wimbledon, where he put together the deepest Grand Slam run of his career by reaching the final in 2022.

But he has revealed on Instagram that the issue is still not fully healed. Kyrgios wrote: “Just wanted to give everyone a quick update – I’ve hit a small setback in my recovery and unfortunately won’t make it back for grass season this year.

“I know how much you’ve all been looking forward to seeing me out there, and I’m genuinely sorry to disappoint. This is just a bump in the road though, and I’m already working hard to get back stronger than ever. Thank you for all your continued support – it means everything to me. See you soon!”

Kyrgios has hardly competed in the last two-and-a-half years, with a string of injury issues derailing his career. He played one competitive men’s singles match in 2023 and only two in 2024, before crashing out in the first round of his home Grand Slam, the Australian Open, earlier this year.

The former world No. 13 then retired midway through an Indian Wells clash with Botic van de Zandschulp. Kyrgios notched his first competitive singles win since 2022 by beating Mackenzie McDonald at the Miami Open in March, but he was thrashed by Karen Khachanov in the next round and has not played since.

Kyrgios has only featured at one Grand Slam since the 2022 US Open. And on that appearance, at this year’s Australian Open, he suggested it could be his last outing in Melbourne.

“Realistically I can’t see myself playing a singles match here again,” Kyrgios said. “It’s hard. When you’re competing for the biggest tournaments in the world and you’re struggling to win sets physically, it’s pretty tough. All my focus now is just not taking anything for granted.”
