Older women can look younger with one hair style that gives ‘invisible face lift’
There’s a common myth that looking younger means chasing trends or drastic changes — but often, the secret is much simpler. For many older women, the right hairstyle can instantly soften features, brighten the face, and take years off their appearance.
In fact, one specific haircut consistently stands out for its ability to refresh your look, boost confidence, and give the illusion of an “invisibe facelift.” According to Max Nicholson, hair stylist at Regents of Beverley, there’s one style is “cheaper than Botox” — and that’s curtain bangs.
He said: “The goal is to fight gravity. Ask for ‘Curtain Bangs’ — I call these the ‘cheaper than Botox’.
“Unlike a heavy fringe, they sweep away from the eyes to highlight cheekbones and open up the face. Pair this with soft, face-framing layers to break up hard lines and distract from static wrinkles.
“Youthful hair moves; if your hair is too heavy, it immediately ages you. Also, avoid styling your hair too heavily – go easy on the hairspray, in other words.”
The professional hair expert also shared some common hair mistakes that can age the face.
“Avoid colouring your hair one solid, dark block colour,” he said. “This creates a harsh contrast that drains the complexion and highlights shadows under the eyes.”
Max went on to share some quick, achievable adjustments suitable that older women can make to give them a youthful look, including a 30-second daily fix.
He said: “Switch your parting. A slightly imperfect or zig-zag part creates instant root lift and volume at the crown, which visually elongates the face. Switching your parting throughout the day will create more volume at the root.
“Also, prioritise shine (use a gloss spray or oil), healthy, reflective hair mimics the natural vitality of youth, whereas matte hair looks tired and dated.
“The goal isn’t to hide your age, but to stop your hair from working against you. The right cut shouldn’t just sit on your head; it should complement your features to lift, brighten, and soften.
“Thank me later!”
