Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘changes mind’ on manager job after Man Utd call | Football | Sport
Solskjaer and another former United star, Michael Carrick, are in the running for the interim role.
But the 52-year-old had told a confidante just last week that he was not interested in returning to coaching any time soon, according to The Sun.
Solskjaer had been sacked by Besiktas in August and is living back in Manchester, while working as one of UEFA’s technical observers.
But he is willing to change his stance on managing again, if picked over Carrick by United.
And should the iconic striker make another comeback to United, The Guardian claim that players would be very happy with the appointment.
Captain Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire, specifically, would welcome the news of his temporary arrival.
Solskjaer brought Fernandes to the club in January 2020 and the skipper mde his thoughts clear on his then-boss, shortly before his sacking.
“We get to the second place last season [in 2020/21], no one was expecting to do a really good season as we did,” Fernandes told Sky Sports.
“It was not as good as we want but it was good overall. No one was expecting us… top four probably but not second place and the closest ones to fight with [Manchester] City.
“For me, he’s doing a really good job and it’s been a big improvement on the team since he arrived. We’re still dropping points at home and it’s not good enough and we know that but it’s not only the coach’s fault.”
In the meantime, Fletcher is in charge to face Burnley and possibly the third-round FA Cup tie against Brighton on Sunday.
Speaking ahead of the trip to Turf Moor, he said: “It’s an amazing honour to be able to lead a Manchester United team. I don’t even think it’s in my wildest dreams that that was something that could potentially happen.
“I think even thinking about playing for the club and stuff like that, but to lead out a team is an amazing honour, and something I’m really proud to do.
“Not in the circumstances I expected it to happen, so that obviously is something that doesn’t sit quite easy with me. But I’ve got a job to do, and I’ve got to lead the team, and think of the great honour and pride in doing that.”
