Oliver Glasner comments about Ruben Amorim and Man Utd say everything | Football | Sport
Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is reportedly in the running to take over at Manchester United following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim. Earlier this season, Glasner had praised United’s progress under Amorim, but the Portuguese coach’s abrupt exit tells a different story.
United’s 2025 campaign was nothing short of disastrous, with the team finishing 15th in the Premier League and amassing a mere 42 points, their lowest tally since the competition’s inception. This season has seen some improvement, with United currently sitting on 31 points from 20 matches and within reach of the European spots.
Despite the uptick in points, performances have been lacklustre, with the team struggling to adapt to Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation. A draw against relegation-threatened Wolves and another draw at Elland Road last weekend led to a fiery post-match press conference from Amorim, where he criticised both the club’s management and ex-player Gary Neville.
Following Amorim’s sacking, United issued a statement expressing their ambition to finish the season as high up the table as possible.
Glasner, who recently led Crystal Palace to FA Cup and Community Shield victories, is among the contenders for the vacant managerial role at Old Trafford. His tactical approach is similar to that of Amorim, which could make him an appealing choice for the United hierarchy.
Speaking earlier this season about United’s tactical approach under the Portuguese head coach, Glasner came to Amorim’s defence by highlighting the team’s underlying statistics.
“It’s really funny talking about the 3-4-3 system, and I think United have the highest xG in the Premier League for scoring goals,” Glasner said back in November.
“Their team has changed. Especially in attack. They needed more goals and invested £200m – buying three players up front.
“Also, now they have players who can play very intense like [Bryan] Mbeumo. For me, that’s impressive to see. We compared it [their last meeting] to where they are now.
“I think their work-rate is much higher than it was last year and then they get the reward.”
Glasner could represent a ready-made solution to replace Amorim, whilst his own future at Selhurst Park remains uncertain, with his contract due to expire this summer. The Austrian has yet to sign fresh terms with the Eagles and could potentially provide the answer to United’s troubles.
“We’re playing the same system,” Glasner said earlier this season when discussing the advantages of deploying a 3-4-3 formation.
“So it looks like it’s a good attacking system. Also, as we show it, you can have a good defensive structure with it.
“It’s all about what you do with the system and how fluid you are in attack and how creative you are.”
