Over 500 bags of human remains found near World Cup 2026 stadium | World | News

Over 500 bags of human remains were found near a stadium set to host World Cup matches this summer. They were discovered among 20 grave sites just miles from the ground in Mexico.

Authorities confirmed the remains were found near the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara. The ground, located in the Jalisco state, is one of three that will be used in Mexico during the tournament this summer. Jalisco is home to the notorious Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) cartel whose leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho”, was killed by Mexican authorities last Sunday (February 22). His death has led to widespread disorder across the state, raising doubts around whether Guadalajara should host World Cup matches.

As reported by GB News, Jaime Aguilar, of the Guerreros Buscadores de Jalisco, a group which searches for missing people, said: “In Jalisco, the missing are made to vanish. This is so it won’t be known; they want to erase all traces of the disappeared.”

He added: “It’s several miles away, but this is happening near a World Cup stadium.” It was confirmed that 270 bags filled with human remains were found at a large property in Zapopan last October.

The discovery, as well as the recent disorder in the state which saw at least 25 soldiers die, has led to concern among locals. Many believe that the World Cup should not be hosted there.

Hugo Perez, who owns a restaurant near Akron Stadium, said: “We have so many problems, and they want to invest in the World Cup? With all the violence, it’s not a good idea.”

England are not set to play at the stadium. But it will host four matches, including Mexico vs South Korea, Uruguay vs Spain, South Korea vs one of four European countries, and Colombia vs either DR Congo, Jamaica or New Caledonia.

Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico President, has reiterated this week that there is “no risk” for visitors coming to the World Cup. She added there there are “all the guarantees” for matches to be held in Mexico.

Meanwhile, Fifa boss Gianni Infantino said he was “very reassured” about the host country. He said on Tuesday (February 24): “Everything’s good. It’s going to be spectacular.”
