OVO Energy to offer free electricity every week for 16 weeks | Personal Finance | Finance

An energy firm is offering hours of free electricity to its customers over the summer. In a bid to be more eco-friendly, OVO Energy is providing customers with 34 hours of complimentary energy.

Members will receive two free hours of electricity every week until the end of August – a total of around 16 weeks.

OVO Energy invites its customers to join in on a summer of savings with their OVO Beyond rewards programme. The initiative offers two free hours of electricity weekly during off-peak times, intended to inspire people to shift their energy use away from the day’s peak demand periods, easing grid stress.

The green energy strategy aims to address the issue of renewable energy scarcity in the UK during peak times, which can often lead to reliance on fossil fuels as a stop-gap solution.

Gráinne Regan, Head of Beyond at OVO, said: “We launched Beyond to help lower bills and reward our customers for taking greener action.

“So whether people choose to get ahead on meal prep, make a dent in the laundry or charge up the iPad, we want to help cut costs by giving two free hours of electricity every week this summer.”

OVO’s four million customers stand to gain as much as 34 hours of free energy across the summer simply by enlisting in the scheme, which is scheduled running until August 31.

More than 650,000 customers have subscribed to OVO Beyond since it began in May 2024. It has been described as the “UK’s first ‘Energy Savings Account”.

OVO Energy free electricity – how to claim

The free electricity is subject to a limit of 1kWh per hour and the complimentary hours must be confirmed within a set window, with members selecting their time slot each week for the following week from a range of options.

Members can choose from available timeslots each week:

  • 9am-10am on selected weekdays
  • 1pm-2pm on selected weekdays
  • 9pm-10pm on selected weekdays
  • 10am-12pm on Sundays

For OVO customers who pay by Direct Debit and have a smart meter, Beyond will unlock automatically inside the OVO app. And customers with Beyond can sign up to the two free hours reward via the OVO app.

This money-saving initiative is part of OVO’s Plan Zero – its sustainability strategy which outlines how it aims to become a net zero business by 2035.

The firm also offers other energy-saving perks, such as OVO Power Move, which provides various rewards via a prize draw – including a year’s worth of free energy – for those who use energy at greener times of the day. Since its launch, OVO’s Power Move has paid customers over £2.8 million for shifting their energy use to off-peak times.

OVO’s free hours reward can be used in conjunction with these other perks.

The launch of the Beyond programme comes as EDF plans to offer its customers free electricity every Sunday this month in exchange for them reducing their weekday peak consumption usage.
