Patrick Dorgu injury latest as Man Utd scorer offers update after Arsenal win | Football | Sport
Patrick Dorgu offered a two-word response when asked about his injury after the Manchester United goalscorer was forced off with a muscle problem during the Red Devils’ thrilling victory over Arsenal. The dramatic encounter proved to be a fiery contest at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday evening, with United matching the Gunners blow for blow. Lisandro Martinez accidentally handed the hosts the advantage 29 minutes in with an unfortunate own goal when his clearance from inside his six-yard box deflected into the back of Senne Lammens’ net.
Arsenal‘s lead proved short-lived, though, as Bryan Mbeumo drew level eight minutes later after Martin Zubimendi’s costly error. The Cameroonian pounced on a woeful pass back to David Raya in his own half, going round the Arsenal shot-stopper and finishing into an unguarded net. Yet the most spectacular moment was still to arrive with a strike that hushed the Emirates. Dorgu then fired his side into the lead for the first time just five minutes into the second half, exchanging a succession of tidy one-twos with Bruno Fernandes on the edge of the box before unleashing a spectacular volley that struck the crossbar and left Raya with no chance.
Yet the 21-year-old’s appearance at the Emirates came to a premature end. With approximately 10 minutes left on the clock, Dorgu collapsed following a rapid challenge with Ben White, grasping his hamstring as he remained grounded.
United’s medical team were swiftly on the pitch to assess him, before Benjamin Sesko was brought on as his replacement. The extent of Dorgu’s injury remains unknown, but it could present a significant hurdle for Michael Carrick at this pivotal point in the season.
The interim manager has been fortunate with player fitness since taking the reins at Old Trafford, but an injury to Dorgu could certainly throw a spanner in the works. And speaking to reporters in the mixed zone post-match, Dorgu walked with a limp and when asked about his injury simply replied: “We’ll see.”
The Danish star was instrumental in United’s 2-0 victory over City in Carrick’s inaugural match as manager, and his impact in Sunday’s clash against Arsenal was equally significant.
This came as Arsenal clawed their way back into the game in the final moments, with Mikel Merino giving the current league leaders a glimmer of hope when he scored 84 minutes in.
However, the celebrations in north London were short-lived, as Matheus Cunha reinstated the Red Devils’ lead just three minutes later with what turned out to be the decisive goal.
After seven minutes of added time, a modest contingent at the Emirates erupted in celebration as United clinched a dramatic 3-2 triumph in the capital, delivering a crushing setback to Arsenal’s hopes of claiming their first Premier League title in over two decades.
The result propels United into fourth position in the standings with 10 wins, eight draws and five losses this season. The Red Devils’ next fixture sees them welcome Fulham to Old Trafford on Sunday, February 1.
