Patrick Mahomes gets heart-wrenching family update before Super Bowl | NFL | Sport
Patrick Mahomes’ mother has revealed that the NFL star’s grandfather is “hanging on” in hospice care ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIX showdown with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Chiefs quarterback is aiming to make history on Sunday night as his team seeks to become the first in Super Bowl history to clinch three Lombardi trophies consecutively.
However, before the game in New Orleans, Mahomes’ mother provided a heart-wrenching update on her father – and Patrick’s grandfather’s health. Randy Martin’s health deteriorated in September, leading to his hospitalisation.
He managed to return home for Thanksgiving, but his daughter Randi – Mahomes’ mother – revealed on Instagram in January that her father had been moved into end-of-life care. She admitted to People magazine that she’s been updating Patrick about Randy’s condition but has been hesitant to “bug” him as he gears up for his third consecutive Super Bowl appearance.
Despite experiencing bad days, Randy’s enthusiasm for Patrick’s quest for his fourth Super Bowl ring is “the one thing that he remembers.” Daughter Randi added: “He’s watching, and he’s excited.
“I know that it has meant a lot to him. And I think he’s hanging on because he wants to see his grandson do an amazing thing or just let him play. I mean, he must be such a proud grandpa, so proud.”
Randi has been regularly updating her social media followers on her father’s health condition. In one post, she requested prayers for her ailing father, stating: “Prayer warriors, please pray for my daddy. He is in the hospital and is not well.”
Throughout the Chiefs’ journey to the Super Bowl, Randi has been a constant presence. After the AFC Championship game, she posted a picture on social media featuring her son Patrick, his wife Brittany, her other children Mia and Jackson, and her ex-husband Patrick Sr., with whom she parted ways in 2006, along with the caption: “Blessed”.
As the Chiefs prepare for their third consecutive Super Bowl against the Eagles at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans this Sunday evening, Patrick managed to find some family time. He was seen out for dinner with Brittany, team-mate Travis Kelce, and his girlfriend Taylor Swift on Friday night.
The Chiefs are slight favourites, according to bookmakers ahead of the kick-off in The Big Easy, due to their history of success on the grandest stage. Mahomes secured his first Super Bowl ring in 2020 when the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in Miami.
The team continued their winning streak with another victory in the 2023 big game, outscoring the Eagles in a high-scoring thriller in Arizona. This was followed by a heart-stopping overtime win against the Niners in Las Vegas just last year.
If Mahomes secures the Lombardi Trophy this Sunday, he’ll etch his name in history as the first NFL quarterback to clinch three consecutive Super Bowls.
