Paul McCartney made tweak to Beatles song which fans say made it ‘perfect’ | Music | Entertainment
A “perfect” song written by The Beatles was helped on its way by legendary musician Sir Paul McCartney. The Fab Four member suggested the band take a different route for their sound on Abbey Road, and tried to dial down the Chuck Berry influences of this particular song.
It seems to have worked, with fans now describing the song as one of their all-time favourites by the band. Written by John Lennon but credited to the Lennon-McCartney writing partnership, the song has delighted fans for decades. McCartney, now aged 83, has since shared how The Beatles would write the song, and how one change made all the difference.
The song in question, Come Together, has been dubbed a ‘perfect’ song by The Beatles, a band with more than a few all-time great tracks. Fans were moved by McCartney’s explanation of how the song came together.
In an interview clipped from the documentary series McCartney, 3, 2, 1, the Let It Be songwriter shared the suggestion he made which turned the song into a hit.
He said: “I said, ‘Wait a minute, wait a minute, that’s a Chuck Berry song.’ The opening line is, ‘Here come old flat-top.’ I said, ‘But we gotta do something to get away from that. So I just suggested we slowed it down.”
The “swampy back and forth” which was given to the song by the slower tempo is what made it a hit, and fans are all in agreement that McCartney’s suggestion made all the difference.
Listeners were thrilled to learn the origins of the classic song, with one fan saying the song sounds as good as it does today as it did 50 years ago. They wrote: “Hard to believe it’s been over 50 years and Come Together still sounds so fresh and relevant.
“The Beatles didn’t just write songs, they captured a moment in time and made it eternal. Hearing Paul talk about the process in his own words just adds another layer of magic.”
Another fan praised the Beatles legend for being as big a fan as his music as members of the public. They wrote: ” Paul is one of the biggest Beatles fans – he loves listening to the music as much as we do.”
A third added: “One of the songs that make Abbey Road their best album. They’d never done anything like it before.” Others have said the show is a great look into The Beatles’ songs.
One user shared: “Great show. You get to glimpse genius.” McCartney 3, 2, 1, was released in 2021 and features a breakdown of McCartney’s work with The Beatles, as well as songs written by George Harrison, John Lennon, and Ringo Starr.
