Peter Wright wife ‘not happy’ with Van Gerwen as marriage mocked again | Other | Sport
Another darts star has taken a jibe at Peter Wright’s relationship with wife Joanne after Michael van Gerwen allegedly irked them. The Dutchman criticised his fellow World Championship star after both had reached the quarter-finals this week.
He argued that Wright “talks c***” in his press conferences because he’s “not allowed an opinion at home”. That came after the Scotsman had labelled his next opponent, Callan Rydz, the favourite to win the tournament in a supposed sly dig.
The back-and-forth was discussed on the Darts Draait Door podcast, with Van Gerwen’s compatriot Vincent van der Voort agreeing with him and poking fun at Wright’s relationship with his wife. Via Darts News, he said: “I don’t think Mrs Wright is too happy with those statements from Michael. And neither is Peter himself.
“But it does often come across that way in their relationship that he has nothing to say at home. I do know that he still gets pocket money. Well, if that’s the case, you’re not the boss at home. I can tell you that. So I guess it’s true.”
Van der Voort knows both Wright and his other half well having been a regular on the PDC circuit since 2007. Joanne joins ‘Snakebite’ on the road and is tasked with sorting his Mohican hairstyle before matches.
“But she’s not the easiest,” Van der Voort continued. “I did an exhibition with him and then you have to sit on a stage to hand out autographs to everyone. She then just stood behind him to keep an eye out. She’s not the easiest, but maybe he just needs that too. Maybe he has a hard time with money and that’s why he gets pocket money.”
Van Gerwen dismissed Wright’s potential mind games, which he’s been accused of playing in the past. He similarly engaged in a war of words with 2024 world champion Luke Humphries before beating him in their last 16 clash.
“Every year at the Worlds he talks so much nonsense, Peter Wright, he’s always allowed to talk c***,” Van Gerwen told reporters. “Nobody takes him seriously on the Tour as well, because he’s not allowed an opinion at home.”
Being on opposite sides of the draw, the pair can only meet in the final. But with the added bite away from the oche, it would be a tantalising prospect should it materialise.
