‘Phenomenal’ film on Netflix is ‘greatest movie of all time’ | Films | Entertainment
Renowned director Martin Scorsese has collaborated with Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio on five occasions, and while each partnership has been a success both critically and commercially, one film stands out above the rest.
The 2013 black comedy biopic The Wolf of Wall Street captivated critics and audiences alike upon its release and has continued to grip viewers over the years.
Directed and co-produced by Scorsese and written by Terence Winter, the film is based on Jordan Belfort’s 2007 memoir of the same name.
With Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role as Jordan Belfort, and a supporting cast including Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Kyle Chandler, Rob Reiner, Jon Favreau, and Cristin Milioti, the film takes audiences on a wild and chaotic journey.
Produced on a budget of $100million, The Wolf of Wall Street was a huge commercial success, raking in $407m at the global box office and becoming Scorsese’s highest-grossing film.
However, those wishing to stream the film will need to act quickly, as it is due to leave Netflix’s catalogue on January 15.
The film’s official synopsis states: “In 1987, Jordan Belfort takes an entry-level job at a Wall Street brokerage firm. By the early 1990s, while still in his 20s, Belfort founded his own firm, Stratton Oakmont. Together with his trusted lieutenant and a merry band of brokers, Belfort makes a huge fortune by defrauding wealthy investors out of millions. However, while Belfort and his cronies partake in a hedonistic brew of sex, drugs and thrills, the SEC and the FBI close in on his empire of excess.”
The picture boasts a 79% critics’ approval rating and an 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, receiving largely favourable reviews, though some viewers felt its runtime was somewhat excessive.
One reviewer praised the production: “The Wolf of Wall Street…is an epic visual storytelling masterpiece from Martin Scorsese.”
Another said: “DiCaprio lives it up like the king of the world and swaggers into a staggering performance. Deplorable, hysterical, phenomenal. The Wolf of Wall Street spirals with sins and sizzles with exuberance.”
A third critic commented: “… fun and funny and brilliant and hilarious and just kills it with THE EXCESS,” whilst another remarked: “Terence Winter, creator and writer of The Sopranos, has written a marvelously comedic script, with howlingly funny bits of dialogue. But perhaps its most magnificent accent is the delightful DiCaprio in perhaps his best union yet with Scorsese.”
Viewers were similarly captivated, with one remarking: “The Wolf of Wall Street is chaotic, outrageous, and razor-sharp, but what truly elevates it is Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance. This is Leo at his absolute peak: fearless, unhinged, charismatic, and disturbingly convincing.”
Another enthusiastic fan penned a rave review: “What a masterpiece! Wild, entertaining, and brilliantly executed. The narration was incredibly great – it added a whole new layer of depth and personality to the film, making the story even more engaging.
“Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance is top-tier, and the mix of comedy, drama, and madness keeps you locked in the entire time. Even though it’s a long movie, it never feels dull or dragged out – every scene has something that keeps you watching. It’s bold, over-the-top, and incredibly well made. I 100% recommend watching it if you haven’t already.”
A third delighted viewer commented: “Never have I watched a movie where I hated almost every single character. The rollercoaster of emotions this movie put me through makes me firmly believe that it is one of the greatest movies of all time. It was funny and intriguing from start to finish, and every performance by the cast was absolutely spectacular. I definitely recommend this for drama and comedy fans!”
The Wolf of Wall Street will depart from Netflix on January 15.
