Phoenix begins French goodbye to Paris 2024 during closing ceremony
The 2024 Paris games are coming to a close — and an iconic indie rock band has kicked off the farewell to the athletes.
Phoenix was tapped to perform in the closing ceremony in a celebration of French artists and their influence on music.
Following the athlete’s parade and acrobatic performers, Phoenix began a celebration of French artistry with a performance of “Lisztomania.” They also performed “If I Ever Feel Better” and “1901.” The band also brought out Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig and Cambodian rapper VannDa on stage.
Kavinsky, a French electronic artist, also came onstage to perform “Nightcall” with Angèle.
Meanwhile, Air, a band associated with the house music subgenre known as French Touch, also played “Playground Love” during the ceremony.
Los Angeles native Snoop Dogg — who has been a major figure in this year’s Games — will be helping in the host city handover between Paris and Los Angeles, which will hold the Olympics in 2028. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo will give the Olympic flag to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass to symbolize the transition.
R&B artist H.E.R., who is from California, is expected to play the U.S. national anthem at the ceremony.
Other Los Angeles-based artists Billie Eilish and the Red Hot Chili Peppers will also be a part of the ceremony.
