Port Hueneme: Military base plunged into lockdown as ‘active shooter’ prompts warning | World | News

A military base was plunged into a lockdown on Tuesday amid reports of an active shooter. A loud alarm was reportedly heard at the Naval Base Ventura County Port Hueneme in California, USA, on January 6 as reports of a threat emerged.

The base was placed on lockdown at 9.30am local time (5.30pm GMT), but officials soon said that reports of a shooter were unfounded. Roughly 45 minutes later, the navel base wrote on social media that “the report was false” and the facility had been reopened.

It said: “ALL CLEAR FROM REPORT OF ACTIVE THREAT. There is no active shooter onboard NBVC Port Hueneme. Force protection has determined the report was false. All gates are now open. LOCKDOWN SECURED.”

An all clear message was also broadcast over public address system to on-base military personnel and people living in the nearby area.

According to witnesses speaking to Your News Channel, the lights were turned off in the medical building near the Silver Strand entrace of the base.

Reports on social media began swirling before the all clear was given, with people claiming an alarm was heard ringing out across the area.

One person wrote: “Base is locked down and very loud alarm is being heard by neighboring civilians in the city. Oxnard PD and the sheriffs office does not appear to be responding in any significant way.”

Other images shared on X showed police and fire crews in attendance before the issue was resolved.
