Premier League to launch own streaming service as major announcement made | Football | Sport


The Premier League is poised to unveil its own streaming service in a significant broadcasting overhaul. Richard Masters, the league’s chief executive, announced the development at the FT Business of Football Conference on Thursday. The service will operate as a direct-to-consumer platform, with Singapore chosen as the initial launch market.

The revelation follows increasing costs of streaming services, with Premier League coverage currently divided between Sky Sports and TNT Sports. Amazon Prime had previously broadcast matches in recent campaigns, though their agreement concluded last season. Amazon Prime has also shown Champions League fixtures alongside TNT.

Meanwhile, football coverage is now additionally available through Disney Plus, DAZN and Premier Sports.

“For the first time, we’re going direct-to-consumer in Singapore. It’s a very long, considered process, carefully chosen,” said Masters.

“We have a six-year agreement with StarHub, one of the two providers out there.

“So from next season onwards, Premier League Plus – rather than Premflix – finally, it’s going to happen.

“It’s the first time the Premier League is going to have its own customers. It’s going to have to deal with promotion, pricing, churn, distribution, all of those things.

“We’re looking to build a business. We’re also looking to learn, to see how that might be replicable around the world.”

He added: “We’ve now taken control of our content.

“It allows us to look differently in the future, and it may become a business centre in its own right.

“But I think it does make all of those different options we have in front of us more easy to execute.”
