Quick 20p ‘test’ AA says all drivers need to do this winter
First, he recommended drivers have their vehicle battery examined since frigid temperatures can contribute to draining them. Then, he demonstrated a useful technique for inspecting car tyres utilising a 20p coin.
He explained: “Wintery roads need grip – check your tyre tread depth. You can do this using a 20p piece. Remember, tyre pressure can also drop in cold weather.”
Should you choose to employ this technique for examining your tyre tread depth, simply insert a 20p coin into the main grooves of the tyre. If you’re still able to see the outer band of the coin, your tread falls beneath the legal threshold – which is 1.6mm – and requires professional examination. Driving in this state could prove both unsafe and illegal.
If the outer band of the coin cannot be observed, this indicates your tread depth exceeds the legal limit. Experts recommend conducting the test across at least three separate areas on each tyre to obtain a more precise reading of the tread depth.
Keeping proper tread depth is crucial for your vehicle’s traction, braking capability, and water displacement to avoid aquaplaning.
Motoring chain Halfords states: “Driving with worn tyres is not only a serious safety risk, but a costly one too. In the UK, the fine for bald tyres is £2,500 plus three points on your licence per tyre, so it’s essential to check them monthly for any signs of damage or wear.”
The legal minimum tread depth stands at 1.6mm. Halfords continues: “However, most motoring organisations recommend changing your tyres before the tread gets to this level.”
Additional advice shared by the AA on Instagram included ensuring you use “winter grade screen wash to avoid freezing”, and preparing an emergency kit containing a blanket, snacks, a torch and a charger should you become stuck in harsh weather conditions.
