Will Howard demonstrated his sportsmanship after Ohio State’s victory over Quinn Ewers and Texas in the Cotton Bowl on Friday. Both Ewers and Howard had comparable performances, with Ewers completing 23-of-39 pass attempts for 283 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
On the other hand, Howard completed 24-of-33 passes, scoring one touchdown and throwing one interception despite an injured hand. Ultimately, Jack Sawyer’s crucial defensive stop on Ewers provided the Buckeyes the edge they needed to defeat the Longhorns 28-14.
After the intense match, Howard displayed his character by seeking out Texas’ star quarterback. Amidst the flurry of reporters and cameras following the Ohio State star, Howard persistently sought out Ewers, navigating through teammates and opponents alike.
At one point, Howard paused to converse with Texas star Arch Manning, exchanging pleasantries before parting ways. Eventually, Howard located Ewers and the two shared a brief embrace and conversation before Ewers retreated to the locker room, visibly disappointed by the Longhorns’ loss.
As the two parted ways, the star quarterback then joined his team for the post-game celebrations. Following the festivities, Sawyer and Howard reflected on what it meant for them and the team to secure a spot against Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff National Championship, with Sawyer praising Howard’s leadership skills.
“I just wanna say something,” Sawyer revealed to WBNS 10TV post-game. “The way this guy has come in from the spring and the way he’s improved and gotten better every day, and taken this leadership role, has done wonders to this team and this offense. And there is no one more deserving of this offensive MVP than this guy right here.
“I’d go to battle for this guy any day of the week. He’s a tough son of a gun, and he goes out there, prepares his a– off each and every week, leading up to the game. And we got the utmost confidence in this guy no matter what.”
Appreciating his teammate, Howard said: “Man, I can’t say enough good things about this guy. I mean, he’s the savior, freaking Jack Sawyer, man. I’m out there praying on that last play, and I just love this guy, man. I love all these guys. I’m just sad I didn’t get more years with him, man, that’s all.”
With thoughts on the upcoming final challenge, the 23 year old stated: “We’re going to enjoy this one for about 24 and get to work because the job’s not finished yet,” continuing, “And we know what we came here for – we came here to win a national championship.
“And they were standing in our way and we took them down. They played a hell of a game. They did some good things, man, And we didn’t play our best, I don’t think, on offense. But we did what we had to do, man.”
Ohio State are set to face off against Notre Dame for the national title on January 20 in Atlanta.
