Rangers could announce Steven Gerrard today with deal ‘all but agreed’ | Football | Sport
Rangers are reportedly on the brink of welcoming back Steven Gerrard as their manager for a second stint. The Ibrox hierarchy have been on the hunt for a new boss following the dismissal of Russell Martin last Sunday, and it’s believed they’ve held talks with the Liverpool legend in London this week about a potential return to Ibrox.
Chairman Andrew Cavenagh and his right-hand man Paraag Marathe have been leading the charge, with Gretar Steinsson – who serves as a technical director in 49ers Enterprises football department – also said to be playing a part. A new report suggests that Gerrard’s comeback to Glasgow could be finalised as early as today. The Scottish Daily Express say that an agreement between the two parties is ‘all but agreed’, which would see the 45-year-old back in the Ibrox dugout nearly four years after his initial departure.
Gerrard first took the helm at Rangers in the summer of 2018 and guided the club to their first Premiership title in a decade when they clinched the championship in the 2020/21 season without suffering a single defeat.
However, the England icon moved onto Aston Villa the following November, where he lasted just shy of a year before being shown the door.
Gerrard then ventured to the Middle East in July 2023 after being appointed as the new head coach of Al-Ettifaq, but faced another challenging spell, with the club deciding to end his tenure in January this year.
Earlier this week, the Anfield legend confirmed his eagerness to return to football management should the perfect opportunity arise.
Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand podcast, he said: “I think certain jobs and certain clubs would suit my style and the way I like to go about it.But I’ve also got time now where I’m not in a rush, where I know the right people that are out there to make me a stronger and a better coach. They’re the people I need to find.
“Because if I get the right match with them people around me, I know and I’ve proved I can be successful as a manager. And that’s what I’m working on in the background now.
“But I’ve had five or six really interesting phone calls since I stopped in Saudi. And I haven’t been ready because I haven’t got that team set around me. And the timing hasn’t been right. My daughter’s just had a baby. I’ve just become a granddad. I wasn’t ready.
“I haven’t got my staff ready. So unfortunately, them opportunities or them phone calls have come at the wrong time, if you like. But if the right call comes my way, the right club, the right challenge, and I’ve got my people set, which I will have at some point, I’ll take that challenge on because it’s in me. It’s in me.”
