Remove stubborn oil stains from clothes by using 2 staple ingredients
A cleaning guru has shared a simple and easy method to remove tough oil stains from clothes in a matter of minutes, and it only requires two household essentials. Getting a stain on a beloved item of clothing can be upsetting and frustrating, with many people turning to social media for help and advice.
Oil is a particularly difficult substance to get out of clothing and fabrics because it repels water. This allows it to penetrate deep into a material’s fibres and cause the stain to embed deeply. It also oxidises over time, making any stains change colour, usually by becoming darker and more noticeable.
As soon as oil comes into contact with an item of clothing or fabric, it will cling to it and lead to permanent damage if left untreated.
Thankfully, one cleaning whizz has shared an easy, two-ingredient solution to banishing any persistent marks and keeping clothes looking as “good as new”. It’s simple to pull off too.
According to her, you only need two ingredients that you likely have at home. The solution is said to be effective and takes minutes to whip up.
Social media content creator Carolina McCauley has amassed millions of followers and fans on TikTok thanks to her regular video uploads where she shares a variety of home tips and tricks to help people with cleaning, organising, styling and more.
In one popular video, Carolina shared how to ensure oil stains “vanish like magic”. In the footage, she can be seen deliberately pouring oil onto a plain white t-shirt. She then immediately blots it up with a piece of kitchen roll.
The camera then cuts to her adding her two-ingredient stain solution – dish soap and baking soda – to a small bowl and mixing together to form a paste.
Over the top of the clip, Carolina added text to provide further clarity. She said “this combo breaks down grease fast” and advised people to target the stain and spread the paste “evenly”, allowing it to dry completely before popping the garment in the washing machine.
In the caption, Carolina detailed her method in full: “Oil stain? Don’t panic. Here’s my go-to trick that makes them vanish like magic. How I do it:
- First, dab away any excess oil if it’s still wet
-
In a small bowl, mix baking soda with a little dish soap until it forms a paste
-
Spread the paste over the stain, making sure it’s fully covered
-
Let it dry completely, then toss the item in the wash as usual
“The result? Clothes look good as new”. In the comments section, people shared their thoughts.
One person said: “Tried it a few days ago and works like a charm”. Another said: “You are a genius thank you”.
A third recommended: “Try baby powder to absorb the oil, and then use dish soap to remove any extra oil. Then give it a good wash”.
But a fourth lamented: “Mine has been oil stained for too long”. Someone else shared their own tactic for getting oil out of clothing, writing: “My daughter was wearing parachute pants at work and a whole bottle of olive oil broke [and] splashed all over them.
“I did what I could with baking soda but then I soaked them [in] dishwashing liquid and water and then I scrubbed and it washed right out.”
