Richest tennis star flabbergasted by Jelena Ostapenko’s £4 sales | Tennis | Sport
Tennis star Jessica Pegula has supported former Grand Slam champion Jelena Ostapenko for making a bit of extra money by selling possessions she no longer needs. The player has been using Instagram to shift some of her things from storage boxes to a Dyson vacuum cleaner.
The 28-year-old burst onto the scene back in 2017, when she beat Simona Halep in the final of the French Open. Despite that title being her only Grand Slam victory, she has also continues to earn prize money on the WTA Tour.
Her career has seen her earn over £14million in prize money. There is also likely to be extra income from things such as sponsorship deals and commercial agreements that she may have.
That hasn’t stopped the 28-year-old from making a little bit of extra money by selling things on social media. Items include perfume samples, vacuum cleaners and storage boxes from as little a £4.
Speaking on the Player’s Box Podcast, Pegula gave a lighthearted response. She said: “We have to give a shoutout to Jelena Ostapenko. Talking about utilising the most of your career, she is selling things on Instagram.
“We have to give her a plug. So, anyways, we had in here as Jelena’s Marketplace, which is really funny. She’s selling stuff. Her Instagram handle is @j.o.clothes1997.
“I’m like flabbergasted by the fact that she does this, but we also, I think, respect it because girl’s just trying to like get her bag and make her money. A little cash here and there, you know? Why not? It’s kind of awesome.
“Honestly, kudos to you. We kind of absolutely love it and you just keep selling your stuff. I mean, can’t wait to see what’s on there next. The Dyson vacuum cleaner is like a legit purchase.”
Pegula herself has a net worth of almost £15 million and is set to inherit a £5.5billion fortune. She is the daughter of Terry and Kim Pegula who own the Buffalo Bills in the NFL, the Buffalo Sabres in the NHL and the Buffalo Bandits in the NLL.
Both Pegula and Ostapenko were part of the WTA finals earlier this month. Pegula was defeated by eventual champion Elena Rybakina in the semi-final stage of the singles.
Ostapenko made it to the same stage in the doubles alongside her partner Hsieh Su-wei. The duo lost to losing finalists Timea Babos and Luisa Stefani.
