Rory McIlroy was subject of homophobic abuse by Ryder Cup fan | Golf | Sport
McIlroy, who appeared rather weary having participated in all five sessions, succumbed to world No. 1 Scheffler in their singles battle. The Northern Irishman endured an extraordinary barrage of hostility throughout the competition.
In one clip shared on social media, McIlroy chose to take action against a supporter who overstepped the mark. As McIlroy and wife Erica Stoll passed by, a spectator beyond the barriers apparently yelled: “Rory! Hey, ya little f*****.”
McIlroy’s smile vanished almost instantly as he swivelled round to confront an individual and summon security.
“Throw him out,” demanded the five-time major champion, pointing directly at the alleged offender. The accused tried to defend himself, questioning why McIlroy wanted him ejected, only for the 36-year-old to retort: “For calling me a f*****.”
Each member of Team Europe was subjected to an unusually aggressive and hostile crowd, but McIlroy bore the brunt of the abuse. He was firm in his belief that such conduct should not be tolerated in future golf events.
“I think golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen out there this week,” said McIlroy.
“Golf has the ability to unite people. It teaches you how to respect people. Sometimes this week, we didn’t see that. So, no, this should not be what is acceptable in the Ryder Cup.”
Even after approaching his ball, McIlroy was continually taunted, with Justin Thomas at one point gesturing for US fans to quieten down while his opponent was playing. During Saturday’s fourballs, police dogs and state troopers were even brought in to help control the situation.
