Ruben Amorim outlines Man Utd transfer plans as ‘clear picture’ forms ahead of summer | Football | Sport
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has insisted the Red Devils will be limited in the transfer window this summer but is adamant the club have a “clear picture” of what they want to achieve. The 13-time Premier League champions endured a dismal 2024/25 campaign as they finished just three places above the relegation zone.
Amorim and his United squad jetted off to Asia for a post-season tour following the conclusion of the Premier League season. On Wednesday, they were defeated 1-0 by an ASEAN All-Stars team in Malaysia as they were booed off the pitch. But on Friday, they got back to winning ways as they defeated the Hong Kong national team 3-1 at the Hong Kong Stadium.
The Red Devils’ 15th-place league finish and Europa League final defeat means they will miss out on European football and the extra revenue it would generate next season.
They may also be viewed as a less desirable option for some players compared to the past as the club have failed to compete for the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson lifted the trophy in his final season as manager 12 years ago. And Amorim has insisted it will take time to build the squad he wants at Old Trafford.
“We are a bit limited [in the transfer market] and we can’t do it all in one summer,” he explained in Hong Kong. “But there is a clear picture for what we want.”
United were in danger of suffering back-to-back losses on their post-season tour after falling behind to Hong Kong midway through the first half when Juninho lashed the ball past Tom Heaton.
The Red Devils drew level just after the interval, however, as Chido Obi found the back of the net. And the 17-year-old nudged his side ahead with seven minutes remaining as he struck for a second time.
Ayden Heaven then wrapped up the victory for the away side in the closing stages as United’s blushes were spared.
Amorim handed starts to Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho for the clash, despite the fact both players have been linked with summer departures.
And ahead of kick-off, the Portuguese boss explained his decision as he said: “Yes [they’re starting], because we need to respect [the opposition] and we need to do better than the last game.
“We understand that the players are tired of travelling. They also have all the commercial things that we do when we get together with our fans. But now is time to perform and show good things to our fans.”
