Ruben Amorim refuses to answer Man Utd question at Leeds | Football | Sport

Ruben Amorim remained tight-lipped when questioned about the transfer window, hinting at possible dissatisfaction with Manchester United’s board. The Red Devils geared up to face Leeds, sat in sixth place before kick-off, three points shy of the top four and three points ahead of Fulham in 12th.

Despite not having European football commitments, United have struggled to impress this season. The club was rumoured to be interested in Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo, but the winger is now set to join Manchester City instead. Any further moves in the January transfer window seem unlikely at present.

Ahead of Sunday’s clash against Leeds, Amorim was probed for more details on the remarks he made before the victory over Newcastle. However, the 40-year-old seemed less than pleased with the situation and remained elusive despite persistent questioning.

“I have the feeling if we have to play a perfect 3-4-3, we need to spend a lot of money and we need time,” he said. “I’m starting to understand that is not going to happen. So, maybe I have to adapt.”

Yet, the Portuguese manager gave little away when pressed on his transfer comments. “I don’t want to talk about that,” he declared. “I just focus on the Leeds game.”

When asked if he regretted his previous statements or if there had been any changes regarding the expected transfer budget, Amorim simply responded: “I don’t want to talk about that.”

After a brief pause, he added: “But you are very smart, so…”

Amorim admitted in December that his recruitment ideas sometimes differ from those of director of football Jason Wilcox, but stressed the importance of finding ‘common ground’ before any new signings are made. However, speaking ahead of the Leeds match, the Portuguese manager suggested it would be a quiet transfer window.

“The transfer window is not going to change,” Amorim added, “We have no conversations at this moment to have any change in the squad. There’s a process, there’s an idea that is going to continue.”

United invested heavily over the summer to bolster Amorim’s attacking options, with Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko arriving in deals totalling more than £200million. The club is now focusing on strengthening their midfield, which could necessitate further significant expenditure.

Potential targets Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson will not come cheaply.
