Russia burns as Ukraine strikes ‘jackpot’ in devastating long range drone attack | World | News
Ukraine carried out a massive and devastating drone attack deep inside Russian territory, hitting a major military weapons depot. Kyiv’s forces have been using their long range drones to deadly effect to hit strategic target across Russia.
Oil refineries, military-industrial sites and ammunition depots have all come under fire, as Ukraine escalates its campaign of aerial attacks. The unrelenting bombardments are designed to disrupt Vladimir Putin‘s formidable war machine, as well as spread fear and panic in moscow’s army. In the latest operation, drones attacked the 100th Arsenal of the Russian army in Neya, Kostromo region.
The military arsenal is situated around 930 kilometres (570 miles) from the Ukrainian border.
Local residents said they heard explosions in the area of the depot all night and a fire was later reported to have broken out at the facility, following the attack. They also claimed that officials had given orders for residents to be evacuated.
Photos shared to social media channels appear to show a massive plume of thick black smoke rising from the depot.
Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed their drones had targeted the military arsenal in a statement on Tuesday.
“The GRU arsenal in the Kostroma region of Russia has been hit,” they wrote on their Telegram channel.
“With the aim of reducing the enemy’s military potential, units of the Ukrainian Defence Forces hit a 100th arsenal of the Main Missile and Artillery Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces in the area of the populated settlement of Neya (Kostroma region, Russia).
“A fire was reported at the facility. The extent of the damage is being clarified.”
The 100th GRU arsenal is a long-term ammunition storage complex that is part of the supply system for the Russian Army, Airborne Troops and Aerospace Forces.
The facility performs functions of accounting, technical maintenance, storage, and preparation for shipment of artillery ammunition, as well as missiles of tactical and operational-tactical levels.
A pro-Ukraine military blogger noted that “striking those sites is like hitting the jackpot.”
