Russia’s army lost hundreds of soldiers in a disastrous assault, after they were lured into a brutal kill zone by Ukrainian forces during fierce battles in Kursk.
Vladimir Putin has gathered an army of around 60,000 troops in Kursk as his commanders desperately try to expel Ukraine‘s army from its border region.
Kyiv’s army stunned the Kremlin after launching a lightening raid in August that initially captured some 1,250 square kilometres of Russian territory.
Although the Russians have managed to steadily push back Zelensky’s soldiers, they are still putting up fierce resistance and inflicting massive casualties on their enemy.
Putin’s army is throwing everything into capturing the key village of Sverdlikovo, which could dramatically change the dynamics of the Kursk salient.
Taking control of the village would allow the Russians to open direct assaults on the town of Sudzha, which is the base of Ukraine‘s military operations in the region.
Ukraine‘s The defensive lines consist of a vast network of trenches, bunkers, various underground facilities, and Dragon Steel anti-tank fortifications.
The Russians attempted to breach these lines by heading for a gap in the Dragon Steel fortifications, which soon became a deadly choke point.
As the Russian mechanised units approached, they were hit by a barrage of fire from artillery, drones and anti-tank missiles.
Vast numbers of Russian armoured vehicles were wiped out, blocking the road for other groups approaching the gap.
As these tried to manoeuvre around the wreckage, they too were brutally picked off by Ukrainian forces.
Surviving Russian soldiers managed to seek cover in a nearby forest that the Ukrainians had deliberately left lightly defended.
As they poured into the forest to regroup, Ukraine unleashed a ferocious HIMARS bombardment, carpet bombing the area with cluster munitions in multiple strikes.
The Ukrainians succeeded in killing hundreds of Russian soldiers and destroyed more than 30 armoured vehicles during the failed attack.
Ukraine‘s incursion into Kursk is the first time that a foreign army has invaded Russia since World War II.
Kyiv says it wants to use the captured territory as a bargaining chip in any future cease-fire talks with Russia.
