Russian military ‘drops bomb on shop in occupied area’ | World | News

The Russian military reportedly dropped a bomb on a grocery store in an occupied Ukrainian city by mistake.

A clip shared by the Telegram channel “Typical Donetsk” shows emergency services in attendance at the scene – a shop in Russian-occupied Yenakievo.

The city, part of the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, was captured by pro-Russian separatists in April 2014 and has been declared part of the internationally unrecognised Donetsk People’s Republic.

In the brief video, the shop appears destroyed, with large holes in the ceiling and one of the walls.

Moreover, in the store, filled with debris, can be seen a large unexploded device lying next to a counter.

What appears to be an aerial weapon was identified by commentators online as an FAB-1500 bomb.

This bomb is a 1.5-tonne weapon normally launched from above by fighter jets remaining at a distance of some 37 to 43 miles from the target, which makes it difficult for aerial defence to shoot them down.

The bomb is directed towards the target by a guidance system and deploys wings that allow it to glide.

Anton Gerashchenko, a former advisor to the Internal Affairs Minister of Ukraine, reported on X claims appearing on Russian social media channels that the bomb had been dropped on the shop by accident.

If this were confirmed, it would mark yet another incident in which Russian forces have inadvertently bombed an area or shot down one of their own aircraft.

On January 2, the Russian Defence Ministry acknowledged one of its aircraft had discharged by mistake a munition while flying over the village of Petropavlovka, in the Voronezh region.
