Second UK tourist found dead in Albufeira after Greg Monks body found | World | News
Tragedy has struck the party hotspot of Albufeira once again as a British holidaymaker, believed to be just 21 years old, was found dead following what appears to have been a fatal drunken tumble down some steps in the Old Town area.
The young man’s body was discovered early Wednesday morning, with the distressing news only coming to light today.
Portugal’s leading newspaper Correio da Manhã initially reported that the unfortunate tourist was found “completely naked” at the base of the steps on Avenida da Liberdade, but this detail has since been refuted by the authorities. An autopsy has been conducted, yet the findings remain undisclosed.
The local police are not treating the incident as suspicious, instead attributing the sad event to excessive alcohol consumption.
Details regarding the deceased’s movements prior to the accident and his accommodation in Albufeira are still unclear.
This comes after the body of Greg Monks was discovered in the Cerro de Aguia area on Wednesday.
Although the news only emerged today, this latest body find was made around 7am on Wednesday, some four hours before Greg Monks’ body was discovered.
Greg, 37, from Glasgow, had been missing for seven days after vanishing following a night out on a stag do.
He is thought to have jumped over a wall and fallen down a steep cliff after becoming disoriented as he tried to head back to his holiday hotel.
On the latest discovery, a source revealed: “A local woman living in an apartment block where this younger British man’s body was found at the back raised the alarm.
“It was just before 7am so a little over four hours before the Scots tourist who had been missing for a week was found dead.
“The younger man was found fully dressed with all his belongings, not naked as has been reported in the Portuguese press.
“He was found dead at the back of a residential building.”
Another said: “He was wearing shorts and a T-shirt.
“What we found out before the PJ took over was that he had been drinking with friends and at some point left them and walked off alone.
“None of the friends realised he had gone.
“It looked from an initial investigation as if he had jumped over a wall from a high area near the Old Town in Albufeira, not realising there was a sheer drop, and smashed his head on a concrete structure below at the bottom of the drop down a steep embankment.”
The PJ police force could not be reached for an immediate comment this afternoon.
The apartment complex is understood to be by Avenida da Liberdade, close to one of Albufeira’s party areas in the Old Town.
Albufeira has increasingly been coming under the spotlight over the way it has gone from a family-focused resort to a partying Mecca that has reportedly brought more violence, drugs and loutish behaviour.
British holidaymakers in the sunny resort have been warned that they could face fines of up to £1,250 if they were caught strolling in their in their swimwear following a new crackdown by local bosses.
The mayor of Albufeira, Jose Carlos Rolo, is getting tough on tourists with measures to curb street drinking and public urination, amid plans to slap new fines on such unruly behaviour.
Last summer a group of partying British tourists put on a shocking display of public nudity which led to locals questioning the type of visitor the town attracted.
Footage of their drunken antics, showing them starkers on their knees in a line on top of a bar counter, went viral as Mr Rolo called the display “deeply negative” and said he would call for police reinforcements.
Following the uproar, eight Brits involved were identified by law enforcement, with GNR police uncovering their identities after an intensive probe, despite initially missing the chance to nab them trousers down.
The unseemly spectacle unfolded at Route Caffe 66, known as Albufeira’s answer to Magaluf’s Punta Ballena strip, notorious for its wild party scene.
One of the revellers was seen slapping the bare backside of a pal who was part of the bizarre party train the holidaymakers formed on the bar top on their knees.
It was not immediately clear today what action had been taken against them following an investigation which was announced at the time.
