Shocking moment footballer elbows rival as fans demand ban for life | Football | Sport
A Welsh football club is facing backlash online after one of their players was seen elbowing an opponent during a match between Trearddur Bay and CPD Porthmadog. A video clip capturing the incident has gone viral on social media, with football enthusiasts calling for a lifetime ban for the player involved. The footage, shared on X and Facebook, shows several players standing at the edge of the penalty area as a penalty kick is taken.
As the referee signals the start of play, a Trearddur Bay player subtly shifts his position before striking an unsuspecting Porthmadog player in the face with his elbow. The Porthmadog player then falls to the ground, seemingly knocked out by the impact.
Football fans across the UK are now urging the Welsh FA to impose a lifetime ban on the offending player.
The controversial clip, which has since been reshared by Porthmadog, was initially posted by a user who commented: “ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING FROM TREARDDUR BAY SHOULD GET BANNED FOR LIFE DISGRACE! ! @CPDPorthmadogFC.”
Others were quick to echo this sentiment in the comments section. One person wrote: “Silly p**** has just played his last game of football,” while another declared: “That’s assault, screw banning him for life, arrest him.”
Another commenter said: “Cowardly act, hope the victim is ok,” while a fourth added: “That’s beyond unacceptable. Football has no place for that kind of behaviour.”
Meanwhile, another user called on the Football Association of Wales (FAW) to investigate the issue, demanding: “@FAWales awful behaviours.”
The Welsh FA have since released a statement, which read: “Tier three matches fall under the jurisdiction of the FAW. The FAW is aware of the incident and will be reviewing it.”
Treaddur Bay have suspended the player and confirmed in a statement that the police have launched an investigation into the incident.
Porthmadog, who compete in the Lock Stock Ardal North West League – the third tier of Welsh Football, emerged as 3-2 victors over Trearddur Bay on Saturday.
Tom Hilditch put the visitors ahead 12 minutes into the match, only for Gruff Ellis to level the score at the 27-minute mark.
Jonny Bravo then put Porthmadog back in the lead with just six minutes left on the clock, before Gruff John extended their advantage to 3-1 shortly afterwards.
Hilditch managed to score a second goal during injury time, but it was too little too late – Porthmadog claimed all three points from the clash.
Following the game, the club posted on X: “Port forced to keep pushing towards the end of the extended injury time but deserving the victory over the 90.”
