Donald Trump is once again making international headlines with his latest threats directed at the UK and other nations. He continues to pursue the idea of acquiring Greenland, the world’s largest island, for national security purposes. It is currently owned by Denmark, who are vehemently opposed to the idea of handing it over to the United States.

Trump has refused to rule out using military force as a way to take control of Greenland. It is strategically important given its location between North America and the Arctic, making it well-placed for early warning systems in the event of ballistic missile attacks. Trump has also cited an apparent threat from rival powers, stating: “If we don’t take Greenland, Russia or China will take Greenland.”

Though his primary issue is with Denmark, he claimed in a recent social media post that Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and the UK have all travelled to Greenland for ‘purposes unknown’.

His announcements have caused many football fans to question whether the England and Scotland national teams should boycott the World Cup this summer, to be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The saga comes just months before the World Cup will be held in North America. The build-up to the tournament had already been overshadowed by the United States taking military action in Venezuela earlier this month.

It remains unclear how the UK would respond to American tariffs, but pulling England and Scotland out of the World Cup would be a huge statement. It’s an unlikely scenario, but stranger things have happened…

Trump further added: “The United States has been trying to do this transaction for over 150 years. Many Presidents have tried, and for good reason, but Denmark has always refused.

“Now, because of The Golden Dome, and Modern Day Weapons Systems, both Offensive and Defensive, the need to ACQUIRE is especially important.

“Hundreds of Billions of Dollars are currently being spent on Security Programs having to do with ‘The Dome’ including for the possible protection of Canada.

“This very brilliant, but highly complex system can only work at its maximum potential and efficiency, because of angles, metes, and bounds, if this land is included in it.

“The United States of America is immediately open to negotiation with Denmark and/or any of these countries that have put so much at risk, despite all that we have done for them, including maximum protection, over so many decades.”

Sir Keir Starmer, meanwhile, has repeatedly called for Trump to respect Greenland’s sovereignty. He pushed back at his American counterpart on Sunday, reportedly telling him over the phone that it would be ‘wrong’ to impose tariffs on NATO allies.
