Solskjaer spotted as Man Utd icon in talks for interim job | Football | Sport

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be set for a sensational return to Manchester United as interim manager until the season’s end, following his recent sighting in Cheshire. The Norwegian was dismissed from his role at Old Trafford in November 2021 after nearly three years at the helm, having initially replaced Jose Mourinho as interim head coach in late 2018 before securing the position permanently the following year.

The Red Devils are on the hunt for a temporary leader after parting ways with Ruben Amorim earlier this week. According to The Manchester Evening News, Solskjaer is not the only former United figure under consideration; Ruud van Nistelrooy and Michael Carrick have also been approached about stepping in until the season concludes.

Both Carrick and Van Nistelrooy have had brief stints in charge of the club in the past, with the Dutch ex-striker taking over prior to Amorim’s arrival. Solskjaer, who left Turkish side Besiktas in August following their Conference League exit, is now believed to be a front-runner for the Old Trafford job.

The 52-year-old was spotted today at a Waitrose in Wilmslow, Cheshire, close to his residence, fuelling speculation of his return.

Solskjaer is fast becoming a front-runner for the position, having expressed his keen desire to return to the club. During his previous tenure, Solskjaer led the team to consecutive top-three finishes in the Premier League – a first since the era of Sir Alex Ferguson – and guided them to the Europa League final, where they were defeated by Villarreal.

In 2021, he also steered the team to a second-place finish, a feat only matched by Mourinho since Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. As a player, the former Cardiff City manager made over 200 appearances for the Red Devils, clinching six Premier League titles and the legendary treble in 1999.

United are reportedly seeking an interim solution until the season’s end, with plans to appoint a permanent head coach for the 2026/27 season. In the meantime, Fletcher is slated to lead the team in Wednesday night’s Premier League match against Burnley and Sunday’s FA Cup fixture with Brighton.
