Solution to endless piles of laundry is ‘life-changing’
It’s far too tempting to put off doing the laundry. Once the day draws to a close and you’re keen to unwind for the evening, the urge to simply dump your dirty clothes in a heap and ignore them often proves irresistible. However, this issue will inevitably spiral out of control, forming a towering mound of dirty washing.
One Reddit user sought guidance for managing what they dubbed ‘The Chair’ – a stack of used clothing, typically piled up on a chair, either awaiting another wear or destined for the washing basket. They explained: “Every place I’ve lived has had some version of ‘the chair’.
“It was what mum called a ‘walk-on floordrobe’ growing up, but right now, decades later, I’ve still got a pile of clothes next to the bed, caught in a limbo between being worn again and the next time I do a load of laundry. Asking around, lots of people seem to wear the type of clothes I’m leaving there more than once (we’re talking jeans, jumpers, etc – not t-shirts and underwear).
“But putting them back in the cupboard just doesn’t quite sit right. So help me out, it’s driving my partner nuts. Does anyone have a solve for ‘the chair’?”
Fellow users offered various remedies, with one detailing their personal strategy. They wrote: “I am one of the people who puts clothes to be worn again back in with the clean clothes.
“I used to have The Chair and it absolutely sucked. No more clothing limbo for me. If an item is actually clean enough to wear, it is clean enough to touch my other clothing.”
Another person suggested a different strategy, advocating for a ‘rule of three’ – saying no more than three items should be in the pile at any given time, reports the Mirror. “A good rule of thumb is if you’re sitting in the living room watching TV and can name every item on the chair then the chair is working,” they explained.
“If you’re making dinner and you can’t name every item on the chair, then things are getting lost on it and it is no longer a useful tool. It has become mess.”
However, a tip posted by another user seemed to resonate most with users. The advice was straightforward: “Wall hooks. Changed my life.”
Many were quick to endorse this suggestion. One user shared: “I have an old coat rack, but it serves the same purpose. It’s clothes that are in-between dirty and clean.”
Another added: “I just put a small set of over-the-door hooks on my closet door so they are on the outside. It’s so nice to see what is ready to be re-worn so easily and it’s right in my face so I’m motivated to not overload it.”
One person chimed in: “Literally all my interior doors have over-the-door racks for this purpose, haha. One even has a 5ft mirror combo which is very convenient for themed outfits, costuming and cosplays.”
Responding to this, another user said: “I moved into a very small apartment a couple of months ago and did this. Best idea I ever had.”
Some took a more humorous approach to the topic. One quipped: “I changed it for a sofa, now it holds three times the volume.”
