South Africa star’s remarkable moment in record-breaking performance | Rugby | Sport
South Africa’s fly-half, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, showcased a moment of brilliance against Argentina in The Rugby Championship. The star player delivered an outstanding performance against Los Pumas in the second-to-last round of the competition, scoring three tries on the day.
However, one particular moment encapsulated his stellar performance. After Cheslin Kolbe made a significant error on the try line, Feinberg-Mngomezulu seized the opportunity for an immediate comeback following the restart. Argentina cleared their lines with a kick, which was collected by the DHL Stormers star, who then launched the ball half the length of the field.
The 23-year-old spotted a gaping hole behind the Argentinian defence and chased after his own kick with impressive speed. Also in pursuit was winger Canan Moodie, who was remarkably beaten by his own fly-half to the ball.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu crossed the try line emphatically and celebrated by punching the air, putting the finishing touch on a fantastic score. Fans erupted in celebration as the Springboks were able to immediately respond to Santiago Chocobares’ try. Watch the clip below.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu received widespread praise on social media following his performance against the South Americans. The Springboks ultimately triumphed with a 67-30 victory, with the fly-half scoring a hat-trick of tries.
The young 10 racked up an extraordinary points haul of 37, establishing a fresh single-match scoring milestone for his nation.
Addressing the media following the encounter, ‘Boks chief Rassie Erasmus was keen to recognise the efforts of other squad members.
“Nobody can disagree that he was brilliant on the day,” said Erasmus. “What we always say is that you can’t put someone in there and immediately expect them to be world class. It doesn’t just happen overnight.
“He has grown a little bit against New Zealand, and a little bit against Australia away, and I think he only has 11 caps – or something like that – but I thought Damian de Allende helped him a lot and Damian Willemse played well and Manie came on played well and there were a lot of guys that played well, but no-one can disagree that Sacha was man of the match and did incredible things on the field.
“But in the lead up to where he was today there were many mishaps and bad kicking in other games he played. Sometimes you must give guys a chance to build reputation and their skillset at Test match level and he is definitely doing that; but there’s hell of a lot of people helping him; Manie and Damian, Tony (Brown, assistant coach), Handre (Pollard), everybody.”
Captain Siya Kolisi remarked: “Sacha was amazing – not just in the way he scored tries but in the way he controlled the game.
“The guys around him helped him make decisions but when we click as a team every single player in the team can show who they are. That’s what the coaches always speak to us about.
“They pick us for certain reasons – we all have a point of difference – and one of Sacha’s is running with the ball. But other players have to do their jobs to put him in the position to do what he does.
“He was really amazing today. He took charge and took leadership which is what we wanted him to do. Hopefully he can continue next week.”
