Steve Bruce becomes grandfather again a year after death of grandson | Football | Sport
Steve Bruce has welcomed the arrival of a new grandchild following the devastating loss of his grandson in October of last year. The veteran manager and the entire Bruce family were left shattered after the sudden passing of baby Madison, who tragically died at just four months old.
Now, Steve’s daughter Amy has welcomed a son called Beau with her husband, former Fulham and Leeds striker Matt Smith. The couple also have a son named Lennon. Amy’s brother Alex, 41, who featured for clubs including Birmingham City FC and Hull and currently works as a first-team coach at Salford City, announced the news on his Instagram with the message: “Welcome to the world my new little nephew Beau xx”.
Steve admitted earlier this year that he considered ending his football career while coping with the family tragedy. Both he and Alex temporarily stepped away from their respective club duties following Madison’s death.
Steve eventually returned to manage Blackpool but was dismissed in October.
He revealed to The Athletic: “There were times when I thought about not coming back. I’m sure people would’ve totally understood but sometimes football has given me a little bit of an escape from it all.
“It’s been the tragedy of all tragedies. Anyone going through the same sort of grief, I feel for them. It’s horrendous that a fine, young, healthy, baby boy doesn’t wake up one morning. We’ll never come to terms with that. It’s agony. Was it a sidetrack to the grief? Possibly. The people here, who I work for, were fabulous and I didn’t want to let them down. They told me to take my time. I was away for a month or five weeks, whatever it was.”
Following Madison’s death, a woman in her 40s employed as a nanny was detained on suspicion of child neglect. However, investigators subsequently determined that it was an accident and closed the case.
Greater Manchester Police stated: “While the circumstances are tragic, we don’t believe any criminality was linked to this death.”
Steve has continued to emphasise that “there’s still not a day where it doesn’t affect you”. He added: “Anyone going through the same sort of grief, I feel for them. It’s horrendous that a fine, young, healthy baby boy doesn’t wake up one morning.
