Stop mould growing in your home this winter with £5 item
A TikTok account has shared a cheaper alternative to dehumidifiers to help you avoid mould in your home this winter.
A woman made a video for the Sleek Finds TikTok account targeting those who dry wet clothes and towels in their house. This is a ‘common culprit’ of developing mould inside homes.
Many people use dehumidifiers to freshen up their homes and get rid of mould – but in the TikTok video the woman, who is not named, explained how she uses dehumidifier boxes to do this instead. These products are much cheaper than dehumidifiers and have the same purpose.
Speaking in the video, the woman said: “If you dry wet clothes and towels in your house you’re going to regret not listening to this. If your windows are like this it’s a clear sign there’s too much moisture in the air which causes mould like this to develop in our homes.
“A common culprit is drying wet clothes and towels in the house especially in the winter months when it’s absolutely freezing and very wet outside so as always I’ve been using these dehumidifier boxes to stop that from happening.”
She explained: “They work by extracting moisture from the air and trapping inside here (inside the box) so I chuck them in every room in the house to help stop the condensation building up. I even chuck them in the washing machine when I close the door because there’s so much moisture that gets caught in there and it creates the smell of damp.”
Even though the TikToker encourages using the hack, some are more sceptical about it. One said: “Please buy an electric dehumidifier! So much more effective and your clothes dry so much faster.”
Another added: “We have a dehumidifier that you plug in. We empty a full tank every few days, more expensive but worth it in the long run.”
However, if you can’t afford to spend on a humidifer then the boxes could be a good alternative. The woman bought the dehumidifier boxes from the TikTok shop where you can currently buy a pack of five for £5.59 as they have been reduced from £11. You can also buy dehumidifier boxes for Amazon, eBay and Lakeland for £5 to £15 for a pack of 12 on Amazon.
In comparison, dehumidifiers range from £40 to £190 for the Pro Breeze 20L Premium Dehumidifier. So they definitely come with a bigger price tag!
