Team Europe’s Ryder Cup win in pictures as Rory McIlroy bites back | Golf | Sport
Team Europe won just one singles match on Sunday, the lowest tally since 1959, but only needed Ludvig Aberg’s victory over Patrick Canley to lift the Ryder Cup. Captain Luke Donald led his side to the closest winning tally since the 2012 ‘Miracle in Medinah’, where Europe also won on American soil.
The Americans earned 8.5 points in singles, equalling the highest total in the era of 12 singles matches, but Rory McIlroy and co had built up an insurmountable lead already from Friday and Saturday, with the cool head of Donald steering them to a historic victory – sealed by Shane Lowry’s iconic putt.
This is the third time since 2004 that the Europeans have won the Ryder Cup on American soil, after Medinah in 2012 and 2004 at Oakland Hills. Donald is only the second European captain to win back-to-back, after Tony Jacklin in 1986 and 1987.
And the celebrations lasted long into the night, on a day that few golf fans will forget, from the abuse hurled at McIlroy, his wife Erica Stoll, and European stars as they made their way around Bethpage Black.
They got the last laugh, however, with large portions of the USA crowd already making their way home by the time the Champagne was popped and Team Europe kick-started the party. Here, Express Sport has taken a look at some of the best pictures from a historic win…
