Two fans die at ATP Finals

Tennis was struck by tragedy on Monday as two people died hours apart from one another. Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport reports that one man had fallen ill in the Fan Village, near the arena.

A second spectator was taken ill in the stands during Lorenzo Musetti and Taylor Fritz’s match. Emergency responders tried to save both men, who were taken to hospital.

However, both sadly died. They were 70 and 78 years old.

Carlos Alcaraz booed

The Italian tennis fans showed their feelings towards Carlos Alcaraz as he arrived at the tournament. Alcaraz is set to face Taylor Fritz in his second group stage game on Tuesday, following his victory over Alex de Minaur at the weekend.

The 22-year-old has developed a huge fanbase through winning six Grand Slam titles at such a young age. However, he did not receive a warm welcome in Italy due to his ongoing rivalry with Sinner.

Footage on social media showed Alcaraz being booed and insulted after arriving in Turin. Fans were seen shouting at Alcaraz outside his hotel, but the Spanish ace will hope it has no impact on his performances.

Novak Djokovic’s retirement plan

Novak Djokovic withdrew from the ATP Finals, allowing Lorenzo Musetti to be drafted into the tournament. However, the tennis legend has shared that he plans to continue playing for a few more years yet.

The 38-year-old has won a record 24 major singles titles and could still add to that total in the coming years. He also clinched Olympic gold at last year’s Paris Games and believes the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics could be the perfect time for him to retire from the sport.

“I’ve always had this throughout my life and my career, I’ve always had a schedule in my head for a year or more, what I want, how I want it,” Djokovic explained after winning the Hellenic Championship at the weekend.

“Since I’ve achieved absolutely all possible goals, I said about the 2028 Olympics because I wanted to play for so many more years. So maybe ending up at the Olympic Games with the Serbian flag, that would be nice.”
