Tennis star smashes racket into her head multiple times after spectacular collapse | Tennis | Sport

Veronika Kudermetova let her frustrations get the better of her after suffering a massive collapse at the Guadalajara Open.

The Russian was one of several seeded players to fall victim to an upset in Mexico, going out to Camila Osorio in the second round.

Kudermetova was 5-0 up in the final set but suddenly choked her lead and lost seven games in a row. And as she let her massive advantage slip, she repeatedly smashed her racket into her head before Osorio beat her.

It wasn’t the only opportunity the seventh seed lost. After winning a close first set in a tiebreak, she came back from a break down to lead 4-2 but was immediately broken back. The world No. 80 took it to a tiebreak and came out on top, forcing a decider.

But Kudermetova raced into a 5-0 lead within minutes, putting herself within touching distance of the third round. She was broken when serving for the match – the beginning of a spectacular collapse.

Suddenly, the world No. 49 had lost five games in a row and found herself back on serve at 5-5. And tempers quickly flared. After losing the first point of the game, she smashed her racket into her head over and over.

But the release of emotions didn’t help. Osorio continued rolling through, holding to love before getting one final break to win 6-7(5) 7-6(2) 7-5 in three hours and 15 minutes.

It was one of several upsets in the second round. As well as No. 7 seed Kudermetova falling, world No. 11 Danielle Collins was stunned by Olivia Gadecki. And third seed Victoria Azarenka retired injured while trailing Kamilla Rakhimova by a set and 0-3.
