‘Terror attack’ leaves one dead and four injured in France | World | News

A person has been killed after an armed man who was reportedly heard yelling “Allahu Akbar” unleashed a suspected terror attack at a French market.

Four people have been left injured after the incident in the eastern city of Mulhouse, which is on France’s border with Germany.

The alleged terror attack struck the city on Saturday afternoon. Officers were reportedly slashed repeatedly during the incident.

A 37-year-old Algerian man was arrested at the scene at around 4 pm, and a terrorist inquiry has been opened by prosecutor Nicolas Heitz.

He reportedly seriously injured two police officers by stabbing one in the neck and the other in the chest, the BBC said. The outlet added that a civilian was killed after trying to intervene.

However, MailOnline reported that an officer had been killed after being stabbed in the neck. It is currently unclear who the deceased is as the situation unfolds.

The outlet reported a source as saying: “The man was attending a police station to sign his judicial control form connected with his house arrest.

“He refused to do this, and instead attacked a number of people with a knife. Those hurt included at least five municipal police officers.”

It added that Mr Heitz said those killed and injured in the attack were all police officers, including a municipal police officer and two parking control officers.

President Emmanuel Macron said there is “no doubt it was an Islamist terrorist attack”.

He said: “I want to reiterate the determination of the government, and mine, to continue the work to eradicate terrorism on our soil.”

Mulhouse mayor Michele Lutz added: “Horror has seized our city. On behalf of the city of Mulhouse, I extend our brotherly feelings to the victims and their loved ones.”
